CSC Sailing Club

Here at UCB there is a very affordable CSC sailing/windsurfing club. The people are very nice and it is so much fun to go sailing!

There was a quite a bit of wind out there last evening and I crewed on a Laser Bahia. We had the gennaker out and it was great fun. Not quite as fast as a skiff, but still a lot of fun!

Off the Grid North Berkeley - Food Trucks

Every Wednesday from 5pm to 9pm several Food Trucks come to North Berkley (Shattuck Ave. at Rose St.) and serve amazing food. I had a very good Chicken Sandwich from Arki. There was quite the crowd, but I did not have to wait too long to get my food. It was delicious!

Point reyes and Bolinas Bay

Point Reyes is a national seashore park of California, located north of San Fransisco.

 

It is famous since the pacific plate and the north American techtonic plates come here together. The St. Andreas fault line runs directly through the park. In the 1906 earthquake here a fence running across the fault line was shifted by approximately 3m. Besides the interesting geology it is well known for hiking, camping and the beautiful nature! A landmark is its exposed lighthouse standing on the cliffs.

In the mooring we (5 internaltional students from France, Italy and Germany) took a rental car from Berkeley to Point reyes. We walked along the cliffs with a beautiful view to the lighthouse. Unfortunately we were not able to visit the lighthouse since the stairs down to it had been closed for the day due to the very windy conditions.

After the lighthouse we went over to the Drakes bay and Chimney Rock (map). At the Lifeboat station we saw elephant seal puppies that where just a arm length away. We had a very nice picknick directly at the lifeboat station and enjoyed the sunshine.

Due to the fact that it was very windy we had to wear jackets.

On our way home we stopped at Bolinas Bay, where we were able to observe some surfers and went on drove on to the Golden Gate Bridge to get home to Berkeley again.

Week 1

Genau vor einer Woche bin ich in SFO bei Sonnenschein und Blauem Himmel angekommen. Am Montag Morgen in der Früh wurde ich daran erinnert, dass wir uns hier in einem Erdbeben gefährdeten Gebiet befinden. Ich wurde sanft aus meinem Schlaf geschaukelt (Stärke 4), es ist aber weiter nix passiert.

Am Montag Nachmittag bin ich dann bei meinen neuen Mitbewohner angekommen. Sie haben mich herzlich begrüsst und waren sehr nett. Am Abend haben wir zusammen Choclolate Chip Cookies gebacken, waren echt lecker. Neben meinen 9 Mitbewohner wohnt noch ein sehr alter Hund, Katze und zwei Ratten bei uns

Nachdem das International Office und am Mittwoch zwei Stunden lang über Visa und sontige wichtige Dinge unterrichtet hatte, konnte ich dann ein Bank Konto einrichten und hab mir auch ne USA Telefon nummer zugelegt. Konnte nen Prepaid Vertrag finden, bei dem ich kostenlos Festnetzanschlüsse in Deutschland anrufen kann ;)
Bei dem Treffen habe ich auch zufällig ein altes Fahrrad angeboten bekommen, dass mir für die nächsten 6 Monate zu verfügung steht. Elektrische Lichter, Helm und Schloss konnte ich mir am Sonntag kaufen, jetzt ist es auch sicher am Abend damit unterwegs zu sein.

UC Berkeley hat auch einen von Studenten mitorganisierten Segelclub den Cal Sailing club. Ich habe den mir am Freitag angeschaut und mich angemeldet. Hoffenltich komme ich im verlauf der nächsten Woche dort öfters zum Segeln!

 Am Sonntag Nachmittag haben mir meine Mitbewohner eine kleine Halbinsel gezeigt. Die Nähe zum Meer ist schon wirklich genial! Auf der Halbinsel haben einige Leute kleine Kunstwerke auf die Steine gemahlt und aus Bauschutt Skulpuren gebaut.

Die Halbinsel enstand vor den 80er Jahren, indem Baukonzerne dort ihren Schutt abluden. Danach würde es der Natur überlassen und ist mit kleinen Bäumen und Streuchern überwachsen. Auch die Obdachlosen haben diese Insel für sich endeckt und kleine Behausungen für sich gebaut, seiten die Polizei das Gelände regelmässig kontroliert sollen es nur noch sehr wenige sein, wurde mir gesagt.
